A Devastating Loss
Life dealt Modupe a cruel blow. A widow and mother of four, she watched her world collapse when her late husband’s family, citing baseless issues, tore three children from her arms. Moreover, they seized properties vital to her small business. Consequently, Modupe faced emotional and financial ruin. Her once-thriving noodle stand, the family’s lifeline, withered, plunging them into destitution.
A Cry for Help
Fortunately, a concerned neighbor acted swiftly, and they informed the local health facility, where Modupe received ARV treatment, about her family’s plight. During a home visit, the team discovered Modupe’s eight-month-old child suffered severe malnutrition, weighing only 3.5kg. This critical condition sparked an urgent response. .
Community Intervention
Through the CDC-funded SPEED Project, Modupe and her child joined the Community Case Management Program (CCMP), and a dedicated team conducted a Household Economic and Vulnerability Assessment (HEVA), which confirmed the family’s need for support. The team also referred the child to Ekiti State Teaching Hospital’s Nutrition and Dietetics Department, where specialists launched a comprehensive health assessment and pediatric treatment plan. Immediately, the program provided a N20,000 nutritional package, and the CCMP team counseled Modupe on infant feeding and monitored her closely to ensure follow-up.
Economic Recovery
Also, the program tackled Modupe’s economic struggles, and with a N25,000 business grant, she revived her noodle stand conveniently. This allowed her to continue caregiving, and s her income stabilized, her child’s health improved dramatically- rising from 3.5kg to 6kg, and the child moved from a red to a yellow MUAC band, signaling recovery from severe malnutrition.
Building a Sustainable Future
To ensure long-term stability, the program connected Modupe to a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA). There, she learned saving habits and joined a supportive financial community. Today, Modupe thrives as a resilient mother and businesswoman. She stands as an empowered caregiver and a testament to how integrated interventions—nutrition, health, and economic support—transform lives.
