ECEWS Strengthens Maternal and Infant Health in Bakassi, Cross River State

In the second week of March, Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS) achieved measurable progress in the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) services in Bakassi Local Government Area, Cross River State, through close collaboration with health facility teams and community stakeholders.

In alignment with ACE 5 programme priorities, efforts were intensified to reduce vertical transmission of HIV and improve maternal and infant health outcomes. As part of routine antenatal services, 10 pregnant women were tested for HIV, ensuring early identification and timely linkage to care where required.

Prevention efforts were further strengthened with the initiation of four HIV negative breastfeeding mothers on Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). This intervention provides essential protection during a high risk period, contributing to improved maternal and child health outcomes.

A key highlight of the intervention was the successful delivery of Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) services at a Community Birth Centre, where Dry Blood Spot (DBS) samples were collected within 72 hours of birth. This timely action supports early clinical decision making and strengthens confidence in PMTCT services among mothers and caregivers.

Collectively, these activities are helping to close critical gaps across the PMTCT cascade, expanding service access, improving early detection, and preventing new paediatric HIV infections, while reinforcing ECEWS’ commitment to eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV in Cross River State.
