Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS) has played a pivotal technical role in shaping Nigeria’s National HIV Prevention Plan (2026–2030), known as the Generation Negative (Gen-N) Strategy, officially launched on March 25, 2026, in Abuja.

The landmark strategy was unveiled under the leadership of the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Temitope Ilori, alongside the National Coordinator of the National AIDS/STIs Control Programme (NASCP), Dr. Adebobola Bashorun, with strong representation from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other key stakeholders. The launch signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s HIV response from a reactive, risk-based approach to a more proactive, development-driven prevention model.
With an ambitious target of achieving a 90% reduction in new HIV infections by 2030, the Gen-N Strategy adopts a whole-of-society framework. It integrates value-based prevention into school systems while strengthening access to essential biomedical prevention services across the country. Central to the strategy is a focus on empowering young Nigerians by fostering an “internal compass” rooted in self-respect, belonging, curiosity, critical thinking, and responsibility, key drivers for sustained behavioral change and long-term prevention outcomes.

As a leading indigenous organization, ECEWS contributed critical technical expertise to the development of the national plan and remains committed to supporting its implementation. Through continued collaboration with government and partners, ECEWS will leverage its experience in program delivery and health systems strengthening to drive innovation and ensure effective rollout of the strategy.
The Generation Negative Strategy marks a transformative step in Nigeria’s journey toward ending HIV, reinforcing a unified, government-led response aimed at securing a healthier, HIV-free future for all.
