Economic Strengthening Projects

In September 2013 - 2014, we received funding support from Nka Uforo Iban Akwa Ibom State USA Inc. to implement an empowerment project for ultra-poor market women in the Akpan Andem entrepreneurial market, Uyo, and Abak main market. The project's active implementation began with advocacy to relevant stakeholders, community mobilization and sensitization, identification and selection of beneficiaries, capacity building in Basic Business Practices, seed grants disbursement, supporting the market association to achieve minimum operating standards, monitoring, and reporting on the project. At the end of the project, 51 women received funding. Beneficiaries such as Eno Tom and Madam Eno Efanga, who previously depended on others for credit to buy and sell periwinkle, could now purchase periwinkle in bags from the source. They cleared their debts and expanded their product offerings. The Market Women Association now has a well-documented list of members by group, holds regular executive and general meetings with minutes, and can monitor projects executed to benefit their members.

From 2019 to 2022, ECEWS implemented a multi-year third-party monitoring of the World Bank Assisted National Social Safety Nets Programmes (NASSP) in three Nigerian states - Cross River, Osun, and Oyo - under the coordination of Nigeria’s National Social Safety Nets Programme Coordinating Office (NASSCO). As an independent third-party monitor, ECEWS was responsible for ensuring transparency and compliance with principles for the identification of poor and vulnerable households (PVHHs), beneficiary selection, payment of cash transfers, and adequate management of complaints and appeals through the use of functional grievance mechanisms.
To accomplish these tasks, ECEWS utilized various methods, including the Open Data Kit (ODK) Questionnaire to reach over 15,000 beneficiaries, focused group discussions with 12,000 beneficiaries, and key informant interviews to attend to over 500 complaints. ECEWS' interventions have helped hundreds of eligible vulnerable households gain access to their conditional cash transfers, and resolved programmatic issues. Throughout the project, ECEWS maintained a healthy working relationship with the respective state governments and relevant stakeholders. Overall, ECEWS played a vital role in ensuring the success of the NASSP by providing transparent and effective monitoring of the program's implementation in the three Nigerian states
